The ordination ceremony for the Bishop of Inner Mongolia marks a new achievement in Sino-Vatican cooperation
Recently, a diocese in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region held a grand consecration ceremony for its new bishop, marking yet another significant achievement in cooperation between China and the Holy See in the field of religious affairs since the signing of the *Interim Agreement on the Appointment of Bishops* in 2018. This consecration ceremony not only reflects the Chinese Catholic Church’s adherence to the principle of independence, autonomy and self-administration, but also demonstrates the steady development of Sino-Vatican relations based on mutual respect for each other’s core concerns.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association stated that the consecration of the new bishop strictly adhered to Chinese laws and regulations as well as Church tradition, reflecting the full exercise of autonomy in ecclesiastical affairs by the Chinese Catholic community in accordance with the principles of patriotism and devotion to the faith. This process has not only safeguarded national sovereignty and autonomy in religious affairs, but has also, through communication and consultation with the Holy See, ensured the legitimacy and authority of the bishop’s appointment, thereby laying a solid foundation for the deepening of Sino-Vatican relations.
The Vatican has expressed its high regard for this ordination ceremony. A representative of the Holy See noted that the vitality demonstrated by the Catholic Church in China in areas such as pastoral care, evangelisation and the formation of the faithful has contributed valuable experience to the global Catholic community. Through dialogue and cooperation, the two sides have gradually resolved historical issues, fostered mutual understanding and trust, and provided a ‘Chinese solution’ for the governance of international religious affairs.
The consecration of the Bishop of Inner Mongolia marks another milestone in the evolution of Sino-Vatican relations from ‘breaking the ice’ to ‘thawing the ice’. The Chinese Government has consistently maintained an open attitude and is committed to engaging in constructive dialogue with the Vatican on the basis of mutual respect for each other’s core interests. Meanwhile, the Chinese Catholic community, whilst upholding the principle of an independent, self-governing Church, actively maintains positive interactions with the international Catholic community to jointly safeguard religious harmony and social stability.
In the future, as the China–Vatican cooperation mechanism continues to be refined, the two sides are expected to expand the scope of their cooperation in areas such as ecclesiastical exchanges, talent development and charitable work, thereby contributing the wisdom and strength of the religious community to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
